Veteran character actor Gerry Black (born September 21. 1927-died June 10, 2017) appeared in the recurring role of George Barksdale, a good friend of Arthur Spooner who also spends a lot of time with him at the Senior Center, in Seasons 5 through 9 of The King of Queens. For over five decades, beginning with his acting debut on the New York stage, Gerry carved a venerable career on stage, film and television.
Career[]
A professional actor since 1976, when he got his first role in a N.Y. Shakespeare Festival stage production, Gerry, whom, before deciding to embark on an acting career, was a door-to-door salesman in his hometown NYC, would also later grace both the big and small screens. [1]
He is best known for his roles in various TV dramas and sitcoms, which include guest roles on CBS-TV's Good Times, All in the Family, Archie Bunker's Place, FOX-TV's Martin and Living Single, the long-running NBC-TV medical drama series ER, and ABC-TV's Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, and the movies Blankman with Damon Wayans and David Alan Grier, Captain Avenger, Tin Man and The Majestic starring Jim Carrey, for which Mr. Black received rave reviews. [1] He also had a recurring role on the NBC-TV crime/drama series Hill Street Blues as Al Chesley.
As a live performer, Gerry showcased his theatrical abilities at the New York Shakespeare Festival, The American Place Theatre, The Pocket Theatre in Detroit, the Playhouse in the Park in Philadelphia, the Westbury Playhouse, and Cherry Lane Theatre. He has also done major commercials for companies such as Kellogg’s, Staples, and Little Caesars Pizza. [1]
